100 Film Facts About Me

This list idea is one that I've been toying around with for a long time. You know how there's those trivia pages for people on IMDb? Seriously, I've always wanted one of those. If I ever do become a director, I'm gonna be so freaking excited once I get some trivia up there. In fact, I can imagine that in 38 years, I'll get a trivia page and it will say "When Stevee was 16, she revealed to everyone on her super awesome blog that she wanted a trivia page on IMDb, and that's why she agreed to make Little Mermaid vs. the Two Headed Shark vs. Giant Octopus: Volume 4.7." Anyway, the aim of this game is to share 100 little pieces of trivia, all to do with me and movies. Because, who knows, once Little Mermaid vs. the Two Headed Shark vs. Giant Octopus: Volume 4.7 comes out, one of you will be searching for some crap to stick on my trivia page, right? You can thank me in a few hundred years.

1. The third time I watched The Muppets, with my friends, I literally cried tears of joy. I was so happy I could not contain myself.

2. I have never seen Star Wars. Getting around to it, though.

3. The first film I remember seeing was A Bug's Life. I think. Well, I just say that, because that's what I remember.

4. I know they've only done two scores, but I will forever watch a movie if Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross score it.

5. I still listen to The Social Network's score. Like, not a day goes by without listening to at least one song from it.

6. Every time I see the Shame trailer, I want to make a movie. I still haven't seen Shame though.

7. I've been excited for The Dark Knight Rises since July 30th, 2008.

8. I actually saw The Dark Knight 22 months before I saw Batman Begins. I know, that's awful.

9. Quentin Tarantino was my first director obsession. Even though I admit, at age 12, I really didn't get Pulp Fiction.

10. However, I think Baz Luhrmann was my first real director obsession.

11. Stuff the haters, Luhrmann makes awesome movies. I love how vibrant he is.

12. Every time I watch Meet Me in St. Louis I always want some sort of tomato soup, even though I can't stand tomatoes.

13. And I always want sponge cake.

14. Which is why I watch it only at Christmas, when I'm as full as ever.

15. One of my proudest achievements is experiencing the opening credits of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo in a cinema.

16. Likewise with the end of Melancholia.

17. I have seen Inception 17 times...

18. ...and I cried at the end of the film every time. Damn you, Christopher Nolan.

19. Lars von Trier gives me a headache every time I think about him. I have a low tolerance for abrasive people like that.

20. The only part of The Hangover: Part II I laughed at was the part about the albino polar bear.

21. And I know The Hangover off by heart.

22. I really don't like westerns.

23. Or sci-fi', for that matter.

24. When I was 12 I had a huge obsession with Grace Kelly.

25. Which then somehow turned into a huge obsession with Vivien Leigh.

26. When I was 13, I wrote a 20 page biography on Vivien Leigh for a school project (what can I say, when it didn't matter I went above and beyond what was expected).

27. I also did a six page history of the making of Gone with the Wind.

28. Days of Heaven is the most beautiful film I've ever seen.

29. I was literally left in a daze after watching The Tree of Life in cinemas.

30. The movie I cried in the most was War Horse. I literally cried throughout the entire thing. I nearly had to suffocate myself in order to not disturb the other cinema-goers.

31. I freaking love Christian McKay. And I'm not gonna stop saying that until someone listens to me.

32. I own three different versions of Gone with the Wind: the normal DVD, the 65th anniversary edition and the really pretty 70th anniversary edition.

33. I own just about 200 DVDs, most of which I've bought myself.

34. The first time I watched my favourite movie (Memento), it was on YouTube.

35. I now own a different zoned DVD, since it is no longer available in NZ.

36. Whenever one of my favourite movies is on TV, I have to watch it. Even if I own it on DVD.

37. '528491' from the Inception soundtrack is my favourite song of all time.

38. I really don't like watching movies with other people.

39. Whenever people want to watch a movie in class, I want to curl up in a ball and die.

40. That said, it wasn't until we watched Schindler's List in my drama class that I really fell in love with that movie.

41. My favourite part of Oscar season is when they play the final montage.

42. Every time I watch An Education I feel a deep desire to do school work. Hmmmm, maybe I should watch it now.

43. Once upon a time my favourite movie was Racing Stripes. I don't regret that.

44. Ralph Fiennes' performance in Schindler's List is my favourite performance ever.

45. Sometimes I listen to the soundtrack for Drive and imagine that I'm walking in slow-mo, and everything is so badass.

46. That said, my main mantra in life is: slow-mo is a no-no, unless you're Quentin Tarantino (or Nicolas Winding Refn, but he doesn't rhyme so therefore it messes up the mantra).

47. I really like Roman Polanski movies.

48. I thought that Olivia Williams' performance in The Ghost Writer was the best of 2010.

49. I honestly think that everyone should see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind at least once in their lives.

50. Little Miss Sunshine was the first film I ever truly loved.

51. Even though I love Black Swan to pieces, I refuse to give it a rating higher than 8/10.

52. Sofia Coppola makes terrific movies. They're all so beautiful.

53. It Happened One Night is the funniest movie I have ever seen.

54. On Friday nights, I really like to watch black and white movies.

55. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is one of the most well-made movies I have ever seen.

56. Yet, I could never watch it again. The way it is made hurts me.

57. Mean Girls is basically the script of my life since I quote it so much.

58. Waitress is one of my favourite movies to watch while I'm sick.

59. Every time I see a film directed by a woman I always feel so happy.

60. I once saw Up in the Air four times within a week.

61. When I saw What's Eating Gilbert Grape, I became uncontrollably obsessed with Leonardo DiCaprio. And this was after I saw Titanic.

62. I love Cemetery Junction, and honestly can't understand why so many people hate it.

63. Let the Right One In was the first foreign film I ever saw.

64. I love Tennessee Williams film adaptations.

65. Especially Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

66. My favourite thing about going to the cinemas is guessing the trailers.

67. I really like lots of editing.

68. And hip-hop songs that are used in trailers.

69. When I was 11 I used to be obsessed with Carrie.

70. Psycho was the first R16 movie I ever saw. I was 11.

71. Pulp Fiction was the first R18 movie I ever saw. I was 12. (that's how we do it here in NZ)

72. When I go into DVD stores, I do admit to displaying movies I like more prominently on the shelf.

73. I Melt with You isn't the worst movie I've ever seen, but it was the worst experience I've ever had with a movie.

74. I really like dystopian movies.

75. When Kathryn Bigelow won an Oscar, I decided I wanted to make movies rather than act in them.

76. When this happened, I literally wanted to get out of my seat, put my fist in the year and yell "FUCK YES!" But then I remembered I was in a public place.

77. Mark Strong is one of my favourite actors because he is freaking awesome in everything.

78. In fact, "Mommy, I want a Kick-Ass party. Dumb little fucks." is my favourite quote of all-time.

79. Cillian Murphy's eyes are the most beautiful things ever.

80. 80s teen comedies are the best.

81. One of my favourite things ever is how in Chris Nolan movies, the title hits right at the end.

82. I love redhead actresses.

83. I think that Rooney Mara's portrayal of Lisbeth Salander was better than Noomi Rapace's.

84. I think Steven Spielberg is the man.

85. I really love movies where the main character is optimistic and happy.

86. I love it when the credits hit during a movie. There's such magic about it (not sure what it is, though).

87. I saw Twilight three times in cinemas. Only once was it my own decision to do that.

88. My favourite chapter of Inglourious Basterds is 'A German Night in Paris'.

89. Vampire's Kiss is the funniest Nicolas Cage movie I have ever seen.

90. Melancholia was the first film I ever saw at a film festival.

91. I get very uncomfortable watching New Zealand films.

92. If I could look like anyone, I'd choose to look like Jessica Chastain.

93. I currently have big posters of The Help, Melancholia, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, War Horse, Black Swan, Inglourious Basterds, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Inception, The Social Network and Warrior in my room.

94. I used to be so obsessed with Hairspray that I watched it literally every day for like, a month.

95. And I still know all the words to all the songs.

96. I used to love The Ring (the new version). I recorded it off the TV and watched parts of it every morning before school for quite some time.

97. I recorded Mean Girls and watched parts of it before school, too. However, the recording cut off the first three minutes, so it wasn't until a year later when I bought the movie on DVD that I actually saw the first three minutes of it.

98. Last year after I finished (and pretty much failed) my maths exam, I felt so depressed about it (seriously, even the teachers thought it was way too hard) that I popped Scott Pilgrim vs. the World into the DVD player and I felt better.

99. My favourite era to see on screen is the 1920's.

100. My favourite place in the world is the cinemas. Either I haven't done much with my life (true) or I freaking love movies (also true). Shame the cinemas are so bloody far away.

What say you? What are some film facts about yourself that you have to share?

  1. Awesome post! I would have some very similar ones to you. Number 82 is my favourite! Not enough people love the redheads!

  2. Get around to Star Wars, get around to it soon! (I can't really say what you'll think of it, because I'm not sure, but I grew up watching the original three XD )
I usually prefer to watch movies by myself too, but it depends who those people are. (Mum's a bit annoying to watch a film with though. That sounds like a horrible thing to say, but she likes to voice her reactions to things which annoys me no end). Alone and in the dark is best.
First film I remember watching is the Little Engine That Could (although I found out many years later it's only half an hour long...it felt much longer when I was little, haha)
Hells yeah Mark Strong? Seen him in Emma? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_-_iMj0PxdY

Okay, that was a long comment. One final thing - I would pay money to see a film called Little Mermaid vs. the Two Headed Shark vs. Giant Octopus: Volume 4.7. Make that, and I will see it! :D

    1. I will. Actually, a fellow blogger is threatening to start a petition so I see it :P
My mum is really silent when we watch movies. My father, however, likes to laugh at EVERYTHING.
No, I so haven't, but I'll check that out! I love Mark Strong.

      Okay, I'll make it :P

  3. What an amazing list. I love it. The only one that upset me was #22. I am convinced, and I mean completely convinced, that if you saw the right Western, you would like it. There are some really, really fun westerns out there for people not used to the genre. For example, Rio Bravo. Anna at Defiant Success turned me on to that movie and I can't thank her enough for it. It's a fucking fantastic 10/10 masterpiece. And not a bad western. It's probably the only western I've seen where some of the main characters sing songs together. Usually it's all guns and bloody violence, but not in Rio Bravo. It's much softer, lighter and funnier. I like that. Though my all-time favourite Western will ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS be ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST. It has THE MOST BADASS MOVIE THEME OF ALL TIME. Listen to it:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6BQKFs3-VM

As for the other choices on your list, I am thoroughly impressed, amused and inspired. I should do a list like this of my own, though I don't know if I'd be able to list 100 things. Actually fuck it, I'm going to do it. Thanks for the inspiration.

This list has also prompted me to seriously reconsider the comedic merits of Vampire's Kiss. It is a pretty damn funny movie now I think about it.

    1. There's a couple of westerns that I like (High Noon, True Grit, Butch Cassidy), but I just have a strange aversion to the genre itself. Which is weird, because they have horses and stuff. I have been wanting to see Rio Bravo for quite some time, though.

And yes, do this list! I thought that I wouldn't be able to fill out the entire 100, but I found that I could keep going.

      That movie is fucking hilarious.

  4. I once watched School of Rock every day for 2 months. It was my favourite movie.
Jack Nicholson is my favourite actor, and I like him best in Chinatown.
I have already read the screenplay to Django Unchained, and I'm still so excited about the movie.
I have never actually seen a Tarantino movie :O
I thought that the Shawshank Redemption was boring and overrated.
I cried at the bit in Santa Claus: the Movie when Dudley Moore got sent away. I was like 5.

    1. Oh, and the first movie I remember watching is Atlantis, although the first DVD I owned was A Bug's Life.
My favourite acting performance is Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will be Blood, which is my favourite movie.
My favourite quote is "Buddy the Elf, what's your favourite colour?"

    2. I haven't actually seen School of Rock. Which is awkward because it is always on TV. Maybe I should get around to watching it, Richard Linklater makes fantastic movies.
You haven't seen a Tarantino movie? Poor you. He makes great movies.
I love Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will be Blood too. Second favourite performance of all-time.

  5. Great post, Stevee. I might do the same thing on my blog sometime soon...

I'm not sure about the first movie I ever saw but the first movie I ever saw at the cinemas was TOY STORY in 1995. It was fantastic. The only people in the theatre were a three-year old me, my mum and my grandfather. I remember the red curtains opening to reveal the biggest screen I had ever seen, as well as the fact that we had the whole theatre to ourselves. I also remember being amazed at the amount of people involved with making it as I saw all the names in the credits. That night was also the first time I saw a hedgehog. It's funny how you remember the little things.

Don't worry about not yet seeing STAR WARS. I personally find all the STAR WARS films to be incredibly overrated.

I saw DRIVE for the first time recently and was really taken with the soundtrack. I've listened to it nearly every day for the last week.

I like what you said about liking to watch black and white films on Friday nights. For some reason I really like watching specific genres on certain days. For example, Friday nights seem like horror nights.

It's funny you say you once saw UP IN THE AIR four times in the same week. A couple of years ago I watched both PANIC ROOM and THE SHINING, in that order, every night for a week and a half.

Haha, I'm pretty sure PULP FICTION was also the first R18 film I saw as well. In fact, I also think I was 12. That's just how us Kiwis roll.

When you say there's something magical about the credits, do you mean the opening credits or the closing credits? I totally agree if it's the former. There's something magical about opening credit sequences, especially if they're done right.

As for movies scripts I know off by heart, mine would be TOY STORY and FIGHT CLUB. I've seen both of those movies way too many times.

That must have been a magical time. Unfortunately, I don't remember that much of my first cinematic experience.
Drive has a really awesome soundtrack. I listen to it a lot!
I can see Friday nights being good for horrors. I need to give myself a horror day of the week - I need to catch up on some horrors.
Wow, that must have been fun!
Us Kiwis are damn awesome when it comes to doing things way before we're legally allowed to!
Both. I don't know, I just like seeing all the names that go into a movie.
I just about know Fight Club off by heart. Love that film!

  8. 2. I have never seen Star Wars. Getting around to it, though. - This needs to be changed, and needs to be changed now.

It'll be interesting to see what you think of it, though, because - like a lot of people - I have grown up with Star Wars from the minute I was born, really, and I think it does have an impact on the way that you view the films. They're great, though (first original three, Revenge of the Sith - which I genuinely liked). The other two, yeah, the less said about them the better. Both have some good scenes in, but as films, they just don't work AT ALL.

Loved getting to know all these little facts about you, really nice addition to Cinematic Paradox!

    2. Saying that as well, dude, HOW can you not like sci-fi? They have such a fantastical element to them you don't get in a lot of films. I hope Star Wars changes your mind on that, though.

Not taking a shine to westerns is more understandable, I guess(you really need to check out Sergio Leone's westerns if you haven't already, your perspective on the genre will be changed, I can assure you!).

I promise to give it a raving review regardless if I hated it. Heck, I'll even give a good review now!!

Star Wars. Only God knows how many merchandise I've own throughout my life. I reckon 13% of George Lucas' wealth comes directly from me. VHSs, DVDs, Action Figures, Replica Light Saber's, Posters, Darth Vader helmet with voice changer, replica model of Millenium Falcon, Lego toys,................... 2. Well, I happen to have written an article a few years ago during NIN's 20th anniversary farewell tour about where to start.

I'll post it on my music blog sometime soon. I would definitely go with The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, Year Zero, and Broken EP. For music that is similar to the Reznor/Ross scores, get Ghosts I-IV and the Still EP.

There's a lot more I can say as I consider myself to be a NIN expert. Yet, I'll eventually come around to posting a lot of my NIN-related material in my music blog as I currently have no interest in writing about music for the time being.

  12. Nice post :).
Have you seen 2001: A Space Odyssey? Sci-fi isn't my favourite genre either, but when I watched this one I realized that any genre is great if the film is great. Haven't seen Star Wars either, but my sister and I are planning to.

Watching movies with other people is... weird. In cinema, it's okay. At home... well, there are two main problems: 1) if you know and love the movie, you feel like your displaying yourself, or telling a big secret to somebody - you know they're going to judge you. 2) it's hard to decide what to watch and in the end you mostly end up with something you don't want to watch right now.

When I listen to the Drive soundtrack I imagine I'm 18 and have my driving license and drive around listening to the soundtrack, and everything is so badass ;).

    1. Haven't seen 2001 yet. It is in my queue, but it keeps getting shafted because I have all of these other films I wanna watch. I'll get there before the end of the year.

That's exactly my problem with watching movies with other people!

Haha, maybe I should listen to the Drive soundtrack while I'm driving and I might be better at it :P

  13. GAH I LOVE THIS!!
I would do this but I fear that mt list would have 95% of the things focusing on Johnny Depp and Ryan Gosling. Also there is the thing about my deteriorating brain and not remembering anything, including facts about my self.

I don't like westerns too. Like none yet. Pretty sure the only one I'll like, or well love, is Django Unchained. But the genre has nothing to do with that :P

At what point did you cry in Inception?? :O I too have cried over 30 times in a Leo Di Caprio movie, but it definitely wasn't Inception.

I hate watching films with people too. I have finally come to that conclusion.

REDHEADS FTW! This obsession was also started by the same Leo Di Caprio film :)

Oh I can never rate Scott Pilgrim and Deathly Hallows, part 2 10/10 either. I do give them a 9.5 because I love them, but they are not a complete 10.

    80s teen comedied FTW!!

I used to watch The Hangover on the day before my Math exams because I would be freaking out so much.

    1. Haha, it's fine if it's 95% Ryan and Johnny!

I like a select few, but I just stay away from them. Django Unchained will be pretty epic, though.

I always cry at the end when Christopher Nolan's name hits. I'm a fragile wee fangirl.

Yeah, it's hard for me to give a complete 10, now. I'm so strict.

I watched The Hangover the night before I got my tonsils out. That thing does wonders when you want to calm your nerves.

  15. I grew up on Westerns but somewhere early on, I tired of them. "Color" and "Indoor Sets", I think, were the biggest factors. But there are some goodies. WESTWARD THE WOMEN (1951, Robert Taylor d-Wm Wellman) is most excellent, and is interesting because the end is just the beginning to the rest of their lives. A favorite of mine.

And MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962 John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin; d-John Ford) displays a lesson in screenwriting that, if you're gonna have a Good vs Evil film, you need a REALLY bad guy (or 3, with Lee Van Cleef and slimy coward Strother Martin joining Lee Marvin). It's also a film that defines what a "sidekick-best friend" is in Woody Strode's performance as Pompey.

These are two 'modern' westerns when many of that genre's fans consider the '30s and '40s as the Classic Period, but both of these offer solid supporting casts that makes the re-watching experience as much fun as first-times.

Hopefully, if and when they do a big-theater release of STAR WARS in Kiwiland, you'll take that opportunity. It loves a biiiig screen and a massive audience. We just returned from CC, by the way, just before the snows hit the South Island last week. Doing repair work down there, even a year later. Wow.

They're doing the 3D rereleases, but I'm not up for that. 3D isn't my most favourite thing in the world. And nice, I hope that went well for you!

And Von Trier's personality can be annoying, but he's made some great films and that is all that matters to me.

And i was a fan of the Ghost Writer also.

    2. I'm open to any genre as long as I've heard quite a bit about it first. But there's something so strange about westerns.

He has made some good films (I haven't seen enough), but Dogville was far too abrasive for my liking.

And haha, I might do that. Anything to work with Fassy!

AS for the list, don't worry about Star Wars or westerns. Nobody is perfect and no one has seen every movie out there or liked every genre. Me, for example, I don't like and I don't watch horror movies- never! I also love redheads and speaking of Schindler's List, I just saw it today and it blew my mind off- it's a masterpiece!

#2 - This makes me feel much better, I watched them for the first time this year. Worthwhile.
#8 - I think I saw Dark Knight before Begins too. Oops.
#38 - Me too. And friends think it's strange to go the movies by myself. I'll find any excuse not to go with people :D
    #49 - Getting there.
#66 - I do this every time as well.
